The Benefits of Knitwear

Knitwear is one of the most common categories used in fashion today, but why is that? Knitted clothing has been around for centuries, remaining a prominent product type in the clothing industry due to its numerous benefits and adaptability. Back in 1916 Coco Channel featured a knitted jersey in a collection of female suits that established knitwear again, and it quickly became associated with liberated women.

This spurred other designers to feature knitwear in their collections too and this quickly established knitwear in the ever changing world of fashion once again. Celebrities began adding knitwear to their wardrobes, including sex symbols Lana Turner and Jane Russell to name but a few. The trend was set and knitwear was sported from then onward, including famously in the 1960’s by Sonia Rykiel, dubbed the “Queen of Knitwear” for her vibrant striped sweaters and her clingy dresses.

Knitted patterns were featured in almost every major fashion outlet, and designers unleashed their creative minds on patterns to produce both informal, vibrant designs as well as very demure pieces, including dresses and such.

So what makes knitwear so fantastic?

Knitted fabrics are far more elastic in comparison to the other two classes of woven and non-woven fabrics. Historically, knitted fabrics have been used in the manufacture of stockings and other clothing that requires a change in shape. And so, dresses and lingerie made from it have a better form in comparison to their counterparts.

Knitted fabrics are extremely elastic and can stretch up to 500% depending on the material and pattern used. Lace is generally the most flexible knitted fabric due to its large holes within the pattern. By contrast, Cable Knitted fabrics are the least flexible as the stitches are crossed under tension to limit deformation. The ability to stretch the material ensures that, whatever your body size, the knitted clothing you wear always remains a close fit to your body shape. This is an especially attractive asset to women as it allows them to make their natural curves more prominent and define their hourglass figure at ease.

The elasticity of knitted fabrics ensure they give an excellent drape, and as the maximum curvature of a fold of the fabric is generally less finer than in woven fabrics, wrinkles and creases are resisted more. This ensures that the fabric’s pattern does not diminish with use and holds its shape over time.

The thickness of most knitted patterns generally means they are warmer and far more comfortable than woven fabrics, hence why they are most always worn closer to the body. Most knitted patterns are made from wool, which remains warm even when wet! Wool is often preferred as it is more elastic, and thus produces a more even knit.

Knitted clothing is always popular during winter when the influential youth of today attempt to remain fashionable whilst sporting thicker clothing pieces in a bid to remain warm! With advances in technology and manufacturing processes, knitwear patterns have been fine tuned to ensure the latest designs are made with both fashion and practicality in mind.
